There is a phenomenon emerging. Quietly, silently and almost unnoticeably, top NDC members are systematically being attacked, robbed and burgled, their houses, residences, offices, shops and vehicles broken into and their privacies invaded as if they are not Ghanaians or are Ghanaians who are not entitled to the protection of the law.
The case of NDC Presidential candidate in the 2004 elections, Professor John Evans Atta-Mills gained publicity, nay, notoriety, because he is who he is. His residence was entered at night whilst two armed police guards were on duty, his 4WD vehicle was broken into, a tape recorder stolen, the vehicle vandalised and documents suspected to have been stolen.
Two days later, in Kumasi, a shop belonging to the wife of Mr. Daniel Ohene Agyekum was broken into and its entire contents, mostly textiles, running into millions of cedis, emptied and carted away.
A seasoned diplomat, Mr. Agyekum used to be Ghana?s High Commissioner to Canada and PNDC Secretary for Eastern Region in the PNDC era, and was the Ashanti Regional Minister and later Minister for State Protocol and Chieftaincy Affairs in the NDC era. He is known to be an NDC firebrand and a strong pro-Mills and pro-Rawlings loyalist in the dynamics of NDC politics.
The police are said to be investigating the burglary, which occurred only in Mrs. Agyekum?s shop, situated within a group of 70 similar shops.
Only last week, a leading medical officer at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (name withheld) who is an enthusiastic and unapologetic supporter of the NDC was trailed by a gang of four men in a taxi from the Hospital to his residence where they ambushed him, pounced on him, pulled him out of his car, snatched his car keys and attempted to drive the car away.
He managed to escape but the robbers, unable to drive away the car owing to a specially installed gadget, vandalised the car and made away with the car?s tape recorder and some mobile phones.
Prior to these three latest attacks, the residence of NDC Deputy National Youth Organiser Ludwig Hlodze had been broken into on four different occasions. The vehicles of Messrs Rojo Mettle-Nunoo and Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Director of Communications and Deputy Campaign Manager respectively of the Mills 2004 Campaign Team, had been broken into on two separate occasions.
Similarly, the vehicle of Messrs Alhaji Baba Jamal, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC was broken into and sensitive party documents stolen. The vehicle of Nii Lante Vanderpuije, Press Secretary to Professor Atta-Mills in the 2004 campaign, was also broken into.
Other leading members, whose vehicles, had been broken into include Alhaji Awudu Ariss, Deputy National Organiser, whose vehicle was "invaded" at the Accra Airport, Hon. Alban Bagbin, Minority leader in Parliament and Hon. Doe Adjaho, deputy Miniority Leader, all have had their vehicles broken into at one time.
?Is this all happenstance, coincidence or enemy action?, philosophically waxed an NDC top guru, quoting from one of Ian Fleming?s James Bond 007 series books.
