Media personality Nana Aba Anamoah is under intense scrutiny from social media users after commending Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s approach to tackling illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia proposed a preventive strategy that includes raising awareness among small-scale miners, empowering the Geological Survey Authority to map mineral reserves, creating a resource pool of equipment for sustainable mining practices, and promoting the use of mercury-free gold catcher machines to ensure environmentally responsible operations.
In response to these strategies, Nana Aba Anamoah took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her approval: “I just listened to Dr. Bawumia’s remarks on galamsey. Glad he’s finally commented on the menace. His solution is the most practical one I’ve heard so far. I hope he walks the talk if he gets the mandate.”
She further urged Ghanaians to support measures that safeguard the country’s water bodies and forest reserves, emphasising that sustainable development is preferable to the short-term benefits derived from illegal mining.
Nana Aba praised Dr. Bawumia's strategy as reflective of a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding galamsey, asserting that it offers realistic measures to combat the issue.
However, her comments have ignited backlash from some social media users, who accuse her of being a supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and advise her to be cautious with her public endorsements.
One user, Aminu Abubakar, commented, “Emotional journalist Nana Aba. Behave please.” Another user, identifying as #Akua Donkor 2024, questioned, “So he has a solution? But we had to demonstrate first? As leader of the police council, he watched them unlawfully jail bystanders. He also waited until our rivers became this bad before he brings these solutions? Herh Nana Aba? This is why I say politics will rot your brains!”
As the debate continues, Nana Aba’s remarks highlight the complex intersection of media, politics, and public opinion in Ghana's fight against galamsey.

🚨Applauding a leader for commenting on a crisis he’s supervised for 8 years is preposterous

And I’ve seen you say, the vice president don’t have power like that.
The man himself is moving around claiming to be the best vice president we’ve ever had, claiming the few good… https://t.co/KDn2SxsCm8

I know you've got all the answers when it comes to Bawumia's practical solutions, but have you tried applying them to your own love life? pic.twitter.com/0YSHOMW00N
