Nightlife in Tamale, the northern regional capital, was injected with extra excitement last Saturday when the metropolis hosted this year’s northern zone Nescafe African Revelation (NAR) programme to hunt for young musical talents from the area.
At the end of the highly competitive and exhilarating programme two out of the 28 groups who participated in the competition were selected to represent the zone in the national final scheduled to take place in Accra in November this year.
The two successful groups, which comprised youths between the ages of 16 and 24, were Nsuo and Agoro.
During the auditioning which preceded the night performance, eight groups were short listed. They were T.B.3, Ankonam Rebbos, Nsuo, Mokyia, K.K.C.J, Ntakara, K-95 and Agoro.
Residents thronged the main taxi rank that was the hot spot for the night, to witness the competition, promoted by Top Dog Communications, an advertising company.
The programme was interlaced with performances by two ace musicians, Batman and Sheriff Ghale, who treated the crowd with very captivating tunes from their repertoire.
Their performances were received with loud cheers and also attracted revellers who filled every available place at the central business area to dance their hearts out even after the competition had ended around midnight.
Each group performed an acapella on Nescafe products in the first round and performed another acapella in the second round with the third round comprising a rap performance over backing instruments.
Speaking with Showbiz the Client Services Manager for Top Dog, Miss Yvonne Tamakloe, said apart from the talent hunt, the competition was part of Nescafe’s strategies “to reward their clients who are mainly the youth.”
According to her, any of the group which emerged as winners in the Grand National final would be sponsored to produce an album.
“The number one group in Ghana will also represent the country in the Western and Central African finals at a venue and date yet to be announced.”
Twenty-four year old Fanta One from the Agoro Group described the competition as a tough one and indicated that hat was the group’s third attempt to take part in the competition.
