Popular Ghanaian media personality, Nana Adwoa Awindor, has urged Ghanaians interested in travelling abroad to pursue legal avenues.
The former 'Greetings from Abroad' host highlighted the numerous opportunities available for young people to study abroad, emphasising that they should pursue educational options rather than resorting to dangerous and illegal methods.
“There are opportunities to travel abroad legally. Especially if you are a young one. Go and study. As I speak to you, there are opportunities for people to do programmes abroad, especially in the United States, with a loan. There are a lot of opportunities. I still don't understand why people go abroad these days and age as stowaways or through the Northern route,” she said.
Speaking at the 2024 Youth Week celebrations by the Assemblies of God Cedar Mountain Chapel in East Legon, Accra, Nana Adwoa Awindor recounted tragic incidents where individuals lost their lives attempting these risky journeys.
“People are dying. Just recently, somebody snuck into a plane and his body was found. People still go on the northern route. We've gone to quite a number of places to do advocacies with international organisations. Yet people still go using the northern route even after hearing that people are falling into the ocean and dying. So I would never encourage anybody to travel illegally,” she stated.
She also urged those who travel abroad to return home after their studies, emphasising the importance of applying their skills and knowledge in their home country.
“The most important thing for me is that if you go, please come back, because we need you here,” she added.
