Ghanaian musician Nii Funny of “Yooko Abreaki Mi” fame has apologized for his demeaning comments against some new VGMA nominees.
Nii Funny, together with Medikal, Fancy Gadam, Article Wan, Feli Nuna, Ebony, Rudebwoy Ranking and Eugy were nominated for the Discovery of the Year category for the 2017 VGMA.
However, speaking in an interview with Accra-based Hot FM, Nii Funny, who was answering a question in line with whether he believes he can emerge winner at the expense of these sensational artistes, said that with the exception of Article Wan of ‘Pu Nye Nye’ fame, Medikal, Fancy Gadam and the others are inferior.
“This year’s nominations, that is the Discovery of the Year category–so many of the artistes don’t deserve to be nominated.. Apart from Article Wan, all the rest are “Borla Goods”..I mean, Medikal, Fancy Gadem, Ebony etc don’t deserve to be nominated”, he noted.
Throwing extensive emphasis on his assertion, Nii Funny adde: “Fancy Gadam is only known in the North…can anybody in this studios or at Hot FM sing Fancy Gadem’s song? This is what I am talking about–you can’t be known by a section of people and then be nominated…Your song has to be popular everywhere.”
However, in a statement issued on Monday, February 27, management of the Artiste apologized on his behalf.
Below is the full unedited apology:
APOLOGY
Lyrics & More, the management team of Nii Funny, has taken note of an interview our artiste granted to Hot 93.9 Fm during which he made demeaning comments about his co-nominees in the New Artiste of the Year Category for this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).
On behalf of the artiste and our management team, we officially apologize to all the nominees mentioned in the said interview and we retract the belittling comments made in reference to their songs and music careers.
Nii Funny, after a discussion with Lyrics & More, has realized he got carried away during the interview and slipped but in all honesty, he has a deep respect for all his co-nominees and wishes each of them the best of luck.
As a management team, we are of the opinion the VGMA is a healthy competition and should not be a reason for any form of bad blood among any group of artistes.
We once again sincerely apologize and retract the comment in its entirety.
