Obour's 'Konkontibaa' song should be banned - Gender activist

Ghanaian gender activist, Abena Benewaa Fosu, has urged music regulatory bodies to ban the song 'Konkontibaa' by Bice Osei Kuffuor, known as Obour.

The activist argued that the song's lyrics could be interpreted as encouraging inappropriate feelings towards children, which is harmful and should not be propagated in society.

She warned that without a ban, the song could normalize such behaviour, leading people to overlook the serious issue of adults having affairs with children.

In an interview with TV3 and monitored by GhanaWeb, Benewaa elaborated on her stance against the media playing Obour's 'Konkontibaa' song.

"Using this platform, I want to say 'Konkontibaa' by Obour should be banned. It should not be played because it promotes paedophilia. The line, 'catch them young and they shall be yours forever,' appears to condone adults grooming young girls. It's disturbing, and this song should not be played.

"We absorb these messages as part of pop culture, internalizing them until they seem normal, which is dangerous. We need to be conscious of such content," she stated.

"Konkontibaa," released by Obour in 2004, became one of his most popular tracks and significantly impacted the Ghanaian music scene. The song won several awards at the 2005 Ghana Music Awards, including Hiplife Song of the Year and Video of the Year.

The track helped cement Obour's status as a leading figure in the hiplife genre and contributed to the broader popularity of Hiplife music in Ghana and beyond.

The song stirred controversy upon its release due to its lyrics, which some interpreted as having connections to paedophilia.

It is worth noting that paedophilia is a sexual feeling directed towards children.
