Kwaw Kese’s record label, Madtime Entertainment, which won the Best Record Label award at this year’s MTN Ghana Music Awards, has signed a four-year recording deal with Okra, one of Ghana’s best rappers, Beatwaves has learnt.
A source told Beatwaves that the rapper, who entered the rapping game 10 years ago after Reggie Rockstone pioneered hiplife, was signed for GH¢60,000. But the Abodam camp has denied that, saying “it is not factual and the deal is not yet sealed”.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Fennec Okyere, manager of the Hiplife Artiste of the Year, who confirmed the contract, said “we signed Okra David because we saw him as one of the best. His voice has for the past years contributed to the success of some songs he featured on and made them hit. We think he has something more to offer music fans out there. However I don’t want to rush and blow things out of proportion for now. The amount you just mentioned to me is not accurate.”
He however failed to establish whether the real amount involved in the deal was below or above the stipulated amount. According to Fennec, “Madtime Entertainment is working on Okra’s fresh album and any detail about the deal would be made public during the album’s launch”, which he indicated would take place in no time.
The ten-track album, he bragged, “when released, would make a hit any day on any planet”.
Okra, according to Ghanamusic.com, rose to fame with the single, ‘Ayekoo’ on Obrafour’s compilation and another on ‘Sounds of Our Time’ recorded by Last Two. The lyrics of Okra, who touts himself as a hardcore rapper, are mostly based on subjects in the animal kingdom.
