Pig farmers fined for causing public nuisance

Shama (W/R) May 5, GNA - A Shama Magistrates' court on Wednesday fined three pig farmers 400,000 cedis each for allowing their pigs to cause public nuisance at Aboadze near Shama

The accused, Akua Aboadze, Kofi Ayaba and Sister Mansa, all pleaded guilty to causing public nuisance contrary to the bylaw of the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (SAEMA).

The court also issued bench warrant for the arrest of Aba Agirimal, Mena Asofua and Mena Nsapan who were jointly charged with the accused persons but failed to appear before the court.

Prosecuting, Mr Anthony Hayford, an Environmental Health Officer, said inhabitants of Aboadze lodged a complain with the Environmental Health Department of the SAEMA that pigs being reared by the accused persons were disturbing them.

He said according to the inhabitants, the pigs invade their homes at anytime and eat their meals and these were source of great worry to them.

Mr Hayford said on December 2003, the Department wrote to the accused persons giving them a month to remove the pigs from the community but the notice was ignored.

He said on May 4, this year, the Department therefore issued summons to them to appear before the Shama Magistrates' Court. 05 May 04
