Port Security Driver Stabbed to Death by Stoway.

Takoradi. March 31, GNA - John Komla Gbortsu, driver at the security unit of the Takoradi Port was stabbed to death by a "stoway" who hid in a compartment of a ship, MV Eva Danielsen ready to sail to the Cape Verde Islands on March 23 this year.

Police Superintendent Emmanuel Dorvlo, in-charge of the Port police unit told the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday that, the ship, which berthed at wharf six of the Port, had sawn timber as its cargo, and was to leave the Port early that morning.

During a routine scanning, two people were discovered hiding in a compartment and one of them identified later on as uncle Ekow was chased and arrested. He was handed over to Gbortsu and another security officer named Otsiman to be taken to the Port security office and when he was being forced to board the security vehicle, he drew a dagger from his under pant and stabbed Gbortsu three times in the chest. When Otsiman went to Gbortsu's aid, Ekow stabbed him in the palm and jumped into the sea and escaped.

Mr. Dorvlo said Gbortsu rushed to the GPHA clinic but his condition was so serious that he had to be sent to the Effia-Nkwanta Government hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Gbortsu had since been buried while police investigations continue to arrest the suspect, Mr. Dorvlo said. 31 March 04
