Two Officers of the Ghana Prisons Service in Sunyani, capital of the Brong-Ahafo Region are reported to have dumped an accused person on the Sunyani Community Tribunal asking that the panel grant him bail. The 55 year old accused, Kwadwo Wam, had been held in Prison Custody for the past five years charged with murder.
The Warders are said to have walked briskly into the court-room with one of them carrying the accused on his back and dumped him on the floor. They earnestly pleaded with the Court to grant him bail saying they could not keep him any longer because of the accused deteriorating health condition.
He had difficulty in getting up from the floor of the Court room. The Tribunal confromnted with the situation was compelled to grant bail in the sum of 20 million Cedis with two sureties.
The accused original;ly charged with murder was put before the Court on August 26 in 1996 after he Killed his wife during a misunderstanding at Atebubu. His plea was not taken and he was remanded in Prison Custody for three weeks. He has however remained in custody ever since and never appeared before any Court.
The docket on the case was reportedly forwarded to the Attorney-Generals Department in the Region for advice but it could not be traced. The tribunal Chaired by Mr Charles Wilson granted the bail under article 14 subsection (4) of the 1992 Constitution and was of the view that there had been an unreasonable delay in committing the accused for trial by the Attorney-Generals Department.
