Promote the shows than yourselves

The turf of Broadcasting is one that comprises three major entities – the radio / TV station, programme and the presenters.

There is the tendency of a presenter to project themselves above programmes they host and when that happens, it breeds what can be termed clash of brand identity. Presenters need to know when to highlight their brands above the other two, and when to project the others above their personal brands.

Nana Aba Anamoah is one amazing news caster of our time and I will be shocked if anyone will think otherwise. Until her emergence, news casting, was extremely rigid than flexible hence a “pioneer” in a new face of television news casting.

Until her suspension issues with TV3, she was on top of her game when it comes to news though her sports show was gradually peaking because one could tell, she genuinely loves sports specifically football which landed her into trouble vindicating the parable “your most cherished thing ends up killing you”. So she exited TV3, on not so good terms but really, she didn’t leave a disgraced person.

Excellence In Broadcasting (EIB) group, the new masters of GH One TV also saw an opportunity and grabbed it immediately without any hesitation and that’s the reason the talented and affluent lady landed at GH One TV with her daily political show called “State of Affairs”. One of the TV shows that received heavy promotion before it started in recent times however whether it lived up to the hype, I must confess I am still compiling my notes but truth be told, I have not been impressed so far though I know what Nana Aba Anamoah can do.

On the 18th May, 2016 edition of State of Affairs, Nana Aba Anamoah made an announcement I thought was not done right and a lot of presenters commit this error for reasons known to them and them alone but if I am pushed to hazard a guess, then I will go for acquaintance.

I would have let this slide if she had made this extempore announcement once but she did it about three times which then got my juices up. “Tomorrow on Berla Mundi’s show” in this case, was referring to the Rythmz live show hosted by the charmer Berla Mundi. Obviously, she was supposed to be promoting the show but ended up promoting the presenter rather which many will say is not a big deal but I hold a different view.

Show belonging to the station in this case Rythmz should have gotten the mention because that’s the primary product and the presenter is secondary especially when the presenter can exit the station any day and the programme will remain with the station. It is for that reason; programme of stations cannot be toyed with.

However, in Ghana the scenario is mostly the other way round with presenters pushing their names and brands into the throats of the listeners and viewers at the expense of the radio or TV station. Surprisingly, all the hardworking presenters seldom promote themselves but rather they do the shows because the show automatically grows with the presenter. The “follow me on twitter” ranting is becoming painfully boring to say the least.

Some of the blame should also be directed at the producer of that show who allowed this error to go uncorrected and even to the extent of giving viewers encores of the error intermittently. Before I end, let me welcome the fresh “Tordia” in the camp of EIB Mr. Ahiable, the new boss of the group’s TV wing.

I am watching with eagle eye what you will do with GH One TV and Agoo TV since you couldn’t finish with the new face you were giving Metro TV. Fortunately or unfortunately, I have a funny feeling this man has the wand but time will still tell because I am ready to see what he has for EIB and Ghanaians as a whole.
