For the Vodafone Most Popular Song of the Year category of the VGMAs, there is only one gospel song against seven secular songs which seemingly indicates the dominance of secular music on the music scene but gospel music trio, Preachers think otherwise.
According to Preachers, what is really happening is that secular songs are getting more corporate attention and monetary investment because corporate bodies do not want to associate with religious bodies so that they can affect a larger portion of the populace adding that this situation is changing in recent times with some companies sponsoring Christian programs.
Preachers also noted that Ghana is a country with majority of the people being Christians and majority of our music being gospel so there is no way secular songs can dominate the music scene.
”As Preachers of the gospel through music, we do our part by submitting to the Will of God and record songs as he leads us to. Conviction of the people solely depends on the Holy Spirit. When you go to places where secular music is hailed; you will find people who love and dance to them.
It’s the same way you will find people who love Gospel music when you go to places where Gospel music is hailed. It’s all a matter of where you choose to be and what you want to hear. Lets desist from comparing gospel and secular music” was Preachers response to the seeming situation of Gospel songs not dominating the music scene even though the belief is that our Gospel artistes are filled with the Holy spirit.
For the 2016 VGMAs, Preachers have been nominated in the Best Music Video of the Year, Best Group of the Year and Gospel Artiste of the Year categories and the three young men are poised and hopeful of winning these awards.
Commenting on why out of 8 songs for the Vodafone Most Popular Song of the Year category, its only one gospel song that is representing, Preachers stated that if the organizers of the awards carefully study the music scene, they would discover other Gospel songs that are constantly on the lips of the people and may have nominated those songs as well.
Preachers is a trio made up of Obed Psych, Emani Beats and Edmund Baidoo. They have been together since 2009 and the trio came about due to their common desire to win lost souls for Jesus Christ through their unique gifts of rapping. They basically do Urban gospel, predominantly Hip Hop and Afro Pop.
Preachers is an unconventional ministry that also has the aim to depopulate hell and win souls through new ways as against the traditional ways of preaching. They have 10 awards to their credit some of which were won at the Africa Gospel Music Awards in London (2013), Christian Community Music Awards in 2013 and 2014 and the Ghana Gospel Music Awards among others.
Preachers recently headlined the biggest gospel concert in Kenya and organized a summit for Gospel artistes and other industry players at the Nairobi Cinema.
