Lynx Entertainment boss Richie Mensah seems worried that viral song “My Level” by Shatta Wale emerged Highlife Song of the Year at the recently held 20th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
According to Richie, the song does not deserve that particular award despite fans of the dancehall artiste voting massively for the song, he claims “My Level” is not a Highlife song.
The multiple award-winning music producer indicated that the VGMA board goofed big time for including “My Level” in that category.
Interacting with DJ Advicer on Accra-based Happy FM’s ‘Ayekoo After Drive’, Richie wasn’t happy that the “My Level” song described by renowned musicologist Professor John Collins as Afro-Pop won Highlife Song of the Year.
He said “Sometimes when you see that your artiste doesn’t win or your favourite artiste didn’t win, just realize that, other artistes’ fans voted more than your fans. it is basic as that.
Richie, who was a member of the VGMA board explained what goes into determining an award winner at Ghana’s biggest music awards ceremony and according to him, the VGMA board has 30 percent, Academy has 30 percent and the fans -which is the largest- has 40 percent.
“I don’t think putting ‘My level’ under highlife category is okay but unfortunately the system allowed it to be by creating the chance for people to vote as many times”. he asserted.
He stressed that “I think is a beautiful song. I think it is one of the biggest songs in 2018.But I don’t think it a highlife song. I think it should have been in a different category. I think it Afro-pop”.
