Shirley Frimpong-Manso Aims At The Oscars

If there is anyone out there, who thinks swift movie producer, Shirley Frimpong-Manso is just experimenting in movie production and will finally abandon it like she did to her radio presenting and events management careers, that person should rethink again because she is not going to stop till she wins the highest film award in the world, The Oscars.

Shirley, looking very pregnant said this during the press preview of her latest movie “Check Mate” at the Silverbird Cinema on Tuesday March 23, when peacefmonline.com, asked her how far she wants to take movie production.

“I honestly don’t think you have seen the best of Sparrow Productions yet. I mean we still have a lot to do and a long way to go. We are aiming at climbing the stage at the Academy Awards and receiving the Oscar for the best African film or best International film. So until we get there, I don’t think you’ve seen the best yet”, she said with so much determination.

“Check Mate”, her fifth release after “Life and Living it”, “Scorned”, “Perfect Picture” and “Sting in a tale” is yet another award winning Shirley Frimpong-Manso Film “Check Mate” is a story of love, mixed with deceit and a little adventure. The story is about a successful young man “Kwame Asante” (New face, Senanu Gbedawo) who has made all the right moves in life, a good job, a beautiful devoted wife “Naana” (Naa Ashorkor), an adorable child and an impending promotion as a senior customs officer at the airport.

Unlike of him, Kwame made a wrong move which shattered his life. What seemed like a typical guys hang-out at a resort on a weekend away from home with his friend and mentor “Kiki” (Ekow Blankson) turned out to be a wrong move. After taking a couple of drinks and losing in a game of chess, he succumbs to a bet to seduce the attractive and sexy “Caroline” (Nadia Buari).

A few weeks later, the consequences of a dirty weekend, dawned on Kwame and turned his life upside down. The attractive and irresistible Caroline became like a sweet poison, to Kwame. The more he got involved with her, the more it destroyed his life. Caroline’s sweetness finally landed him (Kwame) in the biggest drug plot.

You need to watch “Check Mate” to see how Kwame, an aspiring politician got himself in this mess. Was he able to put his life back together? Checkmate will answer that.

“Check Mate” premieres at the National Theatre, on Thursday 1st April. Shirley says all the stars will be paraded at the grand premiere to interact with fans, sign autographs and provide photo opportunities. She also added that there will be subsequent showings at the Silverbird Cinema, starting from Friday 2nd April 2010.

The movie shot entirely in Ghana also features KSM, Khareema Aguiar, Veeda and Kwaku Boateng. Shirley is in contention for “best director in Africa”. Two of her movies “Perfect Picture” and “A Sting In a Tale” have been nominated in ten different categories for this year’s African Movie Academy Awards coming off in Nigeria on April 10, 2010.
