Soothsayer in Prison Custody

THE NKAWKAW Community Tribunal chaired by Mr. William Boapong has remanded a soothsayer, Soma Mamudu, a Burkinabe, in prison custody, for allegedly defrauding two persons at Kwahu Besease in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region.

His victims are Peter Ofori and Abena Abrafi, both farmers at Kwahu Besease.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Samuel Asare said Mamudu went to the town and pleaded with Ofori to find him accommodation, which he (Ofori) did.

He said in the night of March 3, this year, Mamudu called Ofori and showed him a spot where Mamudu alleged Ofori's forefathers had buried a legacy.

He started digging the place and brought out some yellowish metal which he claimed was pure gold and collected ?300,000 from Ofori.

The accused later collected additional ?900,000, for purification of the 'gold,' bringing the total amount collected from Ofori to ?1.2 million.

Mamudu after collecting the amount asked Ofori to send the metal to Kumasi to sell. But to his disappointment, Ofori was told the metal was fake.

He returned to Besease and confronted Mamudu but the later could not give any tangible reason, so Ofori reported him to the police who arrested and charged Mamudu with the offence.

The prosecutor further told the tribunal that Mamudu had applied the same trick on Abena Abrafi and succeeded in collecting ?1 million from her.
