Stealing of Iron-rods; one fined, three granted bail.

Tema, May 07, GNA - Tema Circuit Court "B" has fined Kwasi Eyanyo, a welder 200,000 cedis or in default six months in jail, when he pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to steal and stealing iron rods at Tema Heavy Industrial Area.

Ekitse Yohannes, block manufacturer, Samuel Boamah, Steel bender and Prosper Yaw Dzan, student who pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing iron rods were granted 20 million cedis bail with surety each to re-appear on May 25, 2004.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Edith Nutakor told the court presided over by Mr Stephen Teye that about a month ago, a building technician who is constructing stores at Golf City, Tema, detected the theft of 95 pieces of various sizes of iron rods from his work site. On April 4, 2004, at 0800 hours, the complainant had information that some people were selling iron rods at a certain area, therefore on April 11, at about 0600 hours, he sent the informant with money to buy the iron rods.

Chief Inspector Nutakor said at the time that the informant was bargaining with the accused persons, the complainant appeared at the scene, arrested them (accused) with 35 pieces of the iron rods of various sizes valued at 1,425,000 cedis and escorted them to the Ashaiman police station.

During investigations, the accused persons admitted the offence in their caution statement.
