Taxi driver bites policeman for arresting him

Kumasi, July 31, GNA - A 65-year-old taxi driver who allegedly bit a police officer who attempted arresting him for a traffic offence, has been granted GH=A210,000 (100 million cedi) bail with one surety to be justified by a Kumasi Circuit Court.

Francis Konadu Berko pleaded not guilty to driving through the red light and driving dangerously. He will appear before the court again on August 14.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Comfort Kyei-Baffour told the court presided over by Madam Wilhemina Hammond that on July 27 at 0900 hours, the accused drove his cab through the red light but refused to stop when the police signalled him to do so.

She said Berko also obstructed traffic and was then ordered to drive to the Asawasi police station but he refused and drove the police officer who had already boarded the taxi to a different destination. Prosecution said it was then that he bit the hand of the police officer when he (the officer) attempted to seize the car's ignition key after accused resisted driving him to the police station.
