Tenants At Asylum Down Attacked

On the June 7 last year tenants in a cluster of houses in Asylum Down were assaulted in a dawn raid by military men. Twenty-one men and three women with various degrees of injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants arrived about 2 am, surrounded the house and ordered the men to come out.

The victims were clubbed as they stepped out of their rooms.

The attack was believed to be a reprisal to an injury a carpenter's apprentice inflicted on an unidentified soldier on May 31, 2000 when the apprentice was attacked. Although the police and the Ghana Army said they were investigating the incident, the culprits have never been brought to book.
