I was at the plush Holiday Inn Hotel in Accra at the weekend to witness both the launch of Queen’s Magazine and awards night of the African Women of Worth Awards; where seven women who can be said to be ‘achievers’ in their various fields were applauded.
I have decided once again not to only go the conventional way on commenting on and analyzing issues that transpired on the night, so please allow me to express my praises and punches on matters to the point. The women deserved every commendation with which they had more than enough they bargained for.
It was a gathering of invited guests to celebrate women of top-notch caliber from different fields who deserved to be acknowledged for their distinctive contribution in making sure that our world becomes a better place.
The African Women of Worth Awards is an initiative that deems it fit of the essence that hard work in various grounds of performances be honored and celebrated, thus, who the cap fits, let her wear it and the time to reward individuals in different categories was nigh.
It was now time for every deserving beneficiary to be called to the podium to gracefully pick up her crystal designed award which is a replica for an effort well done. The recipients were as follows;
Inspirational Woman of the Year - Gifty Anti for her program for Stand Point
Excellence in business & Innovation – Estelle Akofio-Sowah, Country Manager, Google Ghana
Excellence in Fashion Designs – Beatrice Bee Arthur
Excellence in Music – Rebecca ‘Becca’ Acheampong
Excellence in Movie Production – Shirly Frimpong Manso
Best Actress – Jackie Appiah
QUEEN’s Choice Award – Nadia Buari
Among the popular faces that were present were, Ebi Bright, Majid & wife, Roselyn Ngissah, Bertha, Helen Asante, Serlom of Miss Goldenwood, Ada of Miss Ecowas, Mary Adomako of Miss West Africa Ghana, Ama K. Abebrese, Allan Davids, Frances Nelson, Florence of Ghana Fashion Awards, Charles Olaleye of SUM, Bola Olalere of Delight Communication, Praye Honiho, Nana Yaa Serwaa Sarpong of Multi TV, among others.
The whole night was braced with glitz and glamour starting from the anchor, Naa Ashorkor who went sassy on the mic, the cozy hall was serenaded by Bertha, and ribs cracking came from Hogan. A mini fashion show was the toast to grace the night with Original Couture, Couture d’Afrique and Akushi Clothing all showing their creativity and swag on the runway.
Did I forget to tell you all that it was a night where beads came to bare; it’s no joke when I tell you that two-thirds of the paparazzi went on the beautiful displays of beads from head to leg. Don’t doubt me because my camera caught Ebi Bright’s ankles beautifully attesting to the fact.
One thing that almost marred the night was that the organizers tempered with the invitee’s patience on time factor. When shall we all learn to start event at the exact time as stated on invitation cards? There is no excuse for bad timing, but for those who choose the informal medium to express excuses; well I believe it is a matter of their style.
With this year’s edition, the organizers have sent a strong signal to other women who are doing their best to beef it up and surly get recognized for their effort next year. And I am sure there will be no ‘Oliver Twist’ from this year’s in next year’s category. Will we care if there is?
Congratulate all the women who were recognized. See you in 2013. ***
