Soul II Soul returns to the Capital on Friday 5th April at the nation’s foremost Jazz Bar and Grill, + 233.
In a night that was nothing short of the impeccable benchmark set from previous editions, the March edition of ‘Soul II Soul’ headlined by Bessa Simons and band was executed in grand style, as retro music lovers and performers all came together on the night to bring forth a jam to remember.
The soulful and unique class act Ofie Kudjoe and the bank of lyrics, vocalist Jones, took turns in delighting the audience with music from the 70’s and 80’s through soul, funk and R&B tracks of the golden age. In what has now become the monthly guessing game, the best kept secret of the night turned out to be the legendary Ben Brako, who sang his hit songs with his ever lively personality, which only seemed to have gotten better with time. Ben truly did justice to the Highlife genre as did Samini and Wutah in previous editions and was enjoyed by all including the younger ones and the ever growing expatriate and tourist audience alike.
The dexterous Djs, including Dj Nii Aryee Tagoe of Joy Fm, also did not fail to come to the party as the audience could barely stay on their seats with hit after hit of days gone by blending seamlessly into the live music breaks.
The complimentary Soul to Soul Kenkey and Roast Pork and Fish with a Champagne Cocktail to boot was clearly a favourite as many enjoyed every nibble and every sip through to the early hours of the morning.
Patrons’ verdict on the event was definitely positive, evident in the smiles and laughter that created a pleasurable atmosphere all night long. Accompanied by great food and drinks, + 233 proved to be the definitive destination for pure and simple retro fun in the Capital.
Friday April 5th sees the return of Bessa Simons of Osibisa Fame with his band and a string of guest artistes including the surprise guest of whom the organisers would only say “a top rated artiste with numerous hits that Ghanaians would love to see again following his long absence from the music scene- whose music is truly timeless and the audience will be thrilled to see again.”
The artiste also assures his fans of a sensational performance since it will be an emotional comeback for him and a way of showing appreciation to his fans for their support through the ups and downs of his music career.
Soul II Soul began for the purpose of bringing a unique twist to entertainment and geared towards satisfying a mature and discerning audience, but surprisingly quite a sizable number of the younger generation have taken to the concept, mingling effortlessly with steps of the past. Guess it goes to show that good music is timeless.
