The story of a storyteller is told from different perspectives with many sharing their encounter with the man touted as a perfectionist, and compassionate, among other positive words.

But before their encounter with him, he had experienced life in ways that broke him, and made him furious to the point of marking a day as a day he will never forget as he was accused ‘wrongly’ and sacked by his employers.

That is the story of James Ebo Whyte, a renowned playwright known by many as Uncle Ebo Whyte, founder and artistic director of Roverman Productions, a theatre and content production company.

Uncle Ebo Whyte's early plays were marked by financial struggles. His debut was funded by a loan from his boss, resulting in a significant loss despite being staged at a 300-seater venue.

For his second play, he sold his brand-new car to finance it but still faced financial failure. His third play at an 800-seater venue yielded a small profit of GH¢300.

In 2000, he decided to focus entirely on his creative talents, symbolically burning his academic certificates. He founded Roverman Productions and, with a GH¢5,000 loan, produced "Unhappy Wives; Confused Husbands." The play premiered on 6th September 2008 at the National Theatre. It was a sell-out success and that was the turning point.

In the documentary below dubbed ‘A Legacy of Inspiration & Creativity’, which seeks to honour Uncle Ebo Whyte who turned 70 on July 20, 2024, GhanaWeb explores the story of the revered playwright who but for the benevolence of his teacher, could have had his education jeopardized because of financial constraints.

Captivating as it is, the documentary explores his journey from early failures and financial struggles to his unwavering faith and eventual success. It features insights from those familiar with ‘The Ebo Whyte Story,’ theatre practitioners who have assessed his contributions, children he has mentored, and many who have benefited from his generosity, among others.
