Gospel singer, Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, has called on Ghanaians to join in the protest against illegal mining (galamsey).

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb during the #StopGalaseyNow protest which began on October 3, 2024, the "Owawani" singer said Jesus spoke against mistreatment, and as such, Christians should vehemently kick against galamsey, which is fast becoming a menace.

"It is because of Jesus that is why we are here, and Jesus stood up to fight against injustices. I am calling on Christians to defend the creation. Discover your voice and be like Christ, defend what God gave us dominion over in the beginning. We are not less Christians for speaking against injustices" he said.

The singer emphasised that he is speaking out to set an example for his kids, showing them it is important to address injustices.

"I wouldn't want my kids to grow up and know that they can't speak about injustices. People have been unlawfully detained, our water bodies are being destroyed.

He added, “The fact that we live in Accra doesn't mean we can't speak about it. We pray that doesn't fall on deaf ear."

The issue of illegal mining is currently a major concern in the country, with numerous netizens condemning it.

Many individuals have called on various platforms for the president to take proactive measures to address the menace.

Several protesters who took to the streets to voice their opposition have been arrested and arraigned in court for perpetrating violence during the demonstrations.
