Prominent Ghanaian actor James Gardiner has highlighted the importance of social media platforms like YouTube in advancing the Ghanaian movie industry.
In an interview with media personality Doreen Avio, the 'Taste of Sin' star highlighted that many people are unaware of how to effectively utilize these platforms for their benefit.
Gardiner pointed out YouTube as a platform that is not being utilised, noting that a single production can attract millions of views and could generate substantial income.
"YouTube is an untapped place I feel people are not paying attention to, but the view of just one of the productions there clocks about 29 million views, and that should tell you African movies are going well," he remarked.
Although he acknowledged the significance of larger streaming platforms like Netflix, Gardiner emphasised the need to focus on YouTube.
Recounting his recent work in Nigeria, Gardiner noted how Nigerian TV stations are quick at picking up movies from YouTube and turning them into hits.
"Work is good in Nigeria, and it's not only Ghana that picks these movies. I feel it's everywhere, and it's even more Nigerians than Ghanaians, When a film drops on YouTube, in a matter of 20 to 30 minutes, other YouTube platforms, which I feel are predominantly based in Nigeria, pick it up and start showing it, hence bringing up the numbers as well,” he said.
Despite the challenges facing the Ghana movie industry, Gardiner says he remains optimistic about its future, adding that with a positive mindset and consistent effort, the industry will continue to thrive and grow.
