Popular media personality Abeiku Santana has expressed strong criticism over the recent arrests of some Democracy Hub protesters on September 21, 2024.

The protesters, including socialite Ama Governor and visual artist Glenn Samm, were arrested during a three-day demonstration at the 37 Military Roundabout in Accra.

They were protesting against illegal mining activities (galamsey), among other economic challenges faced in the country currently.

In a passionate response to their arrest for what he deemed as doing what was right, Abeiku Santana questioned why these individuals were detained by the police.

"They have been arrested and detained. Come on, we shouldn't play politics with this. The protesters were fighting for us! Why are they in detention? Why have they been arrested? What crime have they committed? Disturbing public peace?" he asked.

He highlighted the severe destruction of the country's water bodies and lands, urging the government to take responsibility for protecting these vital resources.

"Ghana, we are at a crossroads. Our water bodies have been destroyed, our lands have been destroyed, and some people have vented their anger and protested against the government whose responsibility is to protect our lands, water bodies, and forest reserves," Santana stated.

He further noted that the alleged violence that erupted during the protests cannot be compared to the extensive damage caused by galamsey.

"Can we quantify the wanton destruction caused to our mineral reserves to what happened days ago?" he added.

Abeiku Santana’s statements come amid growing public outcry and demonstrations against the government's and police's brutal handling of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters.
