Ghanaian actor and television personality David Ato Dontoh has stated that Theatre Arts has imploded under the Mahama-led administration.
According to Mr. Dontoh, popularly known as ‘Ghanaman’, he expected the theatre to explode the current government after it was merged with the tourism ministry but, unfortunately, the sector has rather floundered.
“It is interesting that this time when we have been able to lift culture and add to the Ministry of creative arts and tourism one would have thought that is where it would have gelled and exploded [but] unfortunately we have imploded,” Mr Dontoh told Bola Ray on Starr Chat Wednesday.
He added that the Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, Dzifa Gomashie has failed to revive the practical aspects of theatre and engaged in theories.
Dontoh, who has acted in several movies including international hit movies ‘Beasts of No Nation’ and ‘Deadly Voyage’ said Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who he rated nine out of 10 for his contribution to theatre was the only president who paid attention to the developments of the sector.
He rated former Presidents Rawlings six, Kufuor and Mills five and President Mahama four out 10 for their contribution to the growth of theatre in Ghana.
