Popular Ghanaian artiste Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, famously known as Mzbel, has voiced her frustration regarding the FDA's ban on celebrities endorsing alcohol products.

During an interview on Onua TV, Mzbel questioned the effectiveness of the ban in protecting the youth.

According to her, alcoholic beverages are being advertised on every corner and children are being bombarded with such advertisements.

She stated that if the ban was intended to shield the youth from negative influences, then such an act would be insufficient.

"The Nigerian celebrities are promoting it, the youth are seeing these ads on TV and in movies, what is the point of banning us from advertising if the youth will still see these ads," she quizzed.

Mzbel alleged that the ban was rather a governmental tactic to curtail the earning potential of celebrities, many of whom secure lucrative contracts with alcohol companies.

“The government is just finding a way to block our source of income, and this is the only way they can do that because most of the celebrities get deals from these companies”, she said.

In June 2024, after a two-year challenge, the Supreme Court upheld the FDA’s guidelines, which were established in 2016, prohibiting well-known personalities from participating in alcohol advertisement campaign.
