An Ashtown District Court in Kumasi has fined two persons a total of GH¢80,000 for piracy, an act which is contrary to section 42 (C) of the Copyright Law, Act 690 of 2005.
Osei Boadu was fined GH¢30,000 or in default serve a two-year jail term in hard labour while Kingsley Antwi was fined GH¢50,000 or in default also serve a two-year jail term in hard labour. They both pleaded guilty.
A bench warrant was issued by the court for the arrest of six other persons for the same offence. The six were in court but when they heard the sentence of their colleagues, they bolted.
They are Tony Chuku, Lawrence Okutu, Akwasi Agyei, Osei Assibey, Kwame Kusi and Appiah Takyi.
Police Chief Inspector Rebecca Adjetey, prosecuting, told the court that the eight were arrested by a team of policemen and a copyright taskforce at Adum in Kumasi on December 28, 2007 for selling pirated works of some musicians.
