The SRC Judicial Board has scheduled a hearing for the case involving Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, and his co-petitioners Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah and Lawrence Edinam Egleh against the UGSRC Electoral Commission and its Legal Advisor.

According to a communique released by the board on August 22, 2024, the hearing will address Guru's challenge to his disqualification from the 2024 UGSRC elections.

The parties were notified to appear for the hearing on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 6 PM at the SRC Union Building in the University of Ghana.

"The parties in the matter of MARADONA ADJEI YEBOAH, EMMANUEL OWUSU AMPONSAH and LAWRENCE EDINAM EGLEH v The ELECTORAL COMMISSION and THE LEGAL ADVISOR OF THE UGSRC are hereby notified that the SRC Judicial Board will sit to hear the matter.

"If the case is called and you do not appear and answer, the court will proceed to hear the case without you.

"Kindly take note of the following details; Date: Friday, 23rd August, 2024. Time: 6PM. Venue: SRC Union Building," the statement read.

Guru's petition seeks to halt the upcoming elections and questions the constitutionality of disqualifying non-resident students from contesting in the SRC elections.

What happened?

Guru has been disqualified following the vetting of candidates for the 2024 University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council elections.

The disqualification, announced in a letter on August 16, 2024, was due to Guru and his running mate's non-resident status in the university.

As per Article 30(1)(a) of the UGSRC constitution, candidates for executive positions had to be resident students.

The outcome of this hearing will be crucial in determining whether the elections will proceed as scheduled.
