Out of 8 shortlisted new artists, rapper Kula has been announced the winner of this year’s ‘Unsung Artiste of the year’ at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards last Friday.
Coming from the back of an impressive VGMA 2018, the fast-rising rapper joins other known names including MzVee, Adomaa, Kuami Eugene and Kelvynboy to have won the unsung category.
In Kumasi, during the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Nominees jam, Kula was able to control and dictate his use of the live band to perform rap songs that albeit would have been mimed by some artists.
Kula will have the chance of performing at music’s biggest night during Saturday’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards after battling these fast-rising artists OV, Mr. Drew, Efe Keyz, Unyx, Mantse AY, Lycon and ScripT.
Charterhouse took to their Instagram page to congratulate Kula for winning the Unsung category;
“CONGRATULATIONS TO @kulagh !!!???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???? Come 18th of May, @kulagh will do what he does best on the VGMA stage!!”
The success stories of past winners are a testimonial to the category’s relevance and its potential in helping upcoming artists to break through the music barrier into mainstream Ghanaian music.
Kuami Eugene and Kelvynboy used the opportunity to fully establish themselves as mainstream artistes which have gotten them 2019 VGMA nominations in the numerous categories including the Artiste of the Year and the New Artiste of the Year respectively.
The CloseUp sponsored Unsung category was created to serve as a launching pad to project artists who are doing well but have not had mainstream exposure.
