We Prefer Free Meals In Prison To Freedom - Prisoners

Many prisoners in the Brong Ahafo region say, they prefer to be in prison where they are guaranteed a free three square meals per day, free accommodation and other utilities than to be freed.

This is because there are no existing job opportunities for them when they come out. Others also said they have no families outside the prison walls and fellow convicts are their only trusted family members.

Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Director of the Prison Service, Mr. Ambrose Immoro Salifu who disclosed this in an interview with SPACE FM in Sunyani, further disclosed that many prisoners who were recently granted amnesty by the President, John Agyemang Kuffour, have returned, compounding the already overcrowding situation of the prison.

The returnee prisoners claim that the amnesty granted them by President Kufuor, did more harm than good. They said, they were sent home without capital or any skill to live on.

Currently the Sunyani prison is catering for over {743} prisoners, about three times the capacity of the prison.
