Ghanaian artiste Kurl Songx has shed light on the controversy surrounding Sarkodie's verse in his 2017 song, ‘Jennifer Lomotey’.
In an interview on Onua FM on August 21, 2024, Kurl Songx revealed that some Krobo chiefs and elders were upset by Sarkodie's lyrics, which referenced a folklore about Krobo women and promiscuity.
The contentious verse, which translates to "A beautiful Krobo lady with beads on her waist, she has been cursed with promiscuity by Komfo Anokye," sparked anger among the Krobo community.
To address the issue, Kurl Songx, along with Sarkodie's late lawyer and his manager, met with Krobo elders to resolve the matter peacefully.
“I got to understand that it’s part of the work. We met them and solved it amicably. Together with Sarkodie’s late lawyer, my manager and I talked about it. We met I think in East Legon and we explained to them that this is not personal, it's art,” he narrated.
Kurl Songx explained that the lyrics were not meant to offend but were part of artistic expression.
“Thanks to them, somebody else would not have understood because it was very sensitive. Sarkodie’s words were art, not to just tarnish someone’s image,” he added.
The controversial song lyrics sparked trouble for Sarkodie. In 2024, a group calling itself the New Ghana Social Justice Forum, petitioned the French National Olympic and Sports Committee to exclude rapper Sarkodie from performing.
The group claimed that Sarkodie is "misogynistic," citing lyrics from the song "Jennifer Lomotey."
They also referenced his recent conflict with actress Yvonne Nelson, who alleged in her memoir that Sarkodie forced her to abort a pregnancy.
