Ghanaian Highlife musician Adangba has expressed his concern over the country's growing preference for foreign cultures.

This preference, according to him, is due to a decline in the appreciation of Highlife music.

In a report by graphic.com.gh, Adangba lamented that many young Ghanaian artistes are reluctant to identify with Highlife, viewing it as outdated and preferring foreign genres like Dancehall.

“Presently, if you describe any of the young musicians as a Highlife artiste, they will out rightly reject it because they think the genre is for old people. We have opened our arms to every foreign thing and continue to look down on our own,” he stated.

Adangba cited how Highlife legends such as Nana Ampadu and George Darko played in his own life, providing guidance and wisdom through their music.

He argued that the abandonment of Highlife has led to a loss of cultural identity and valuable life lessons that the genre traditionally imparted.

“For some of us, we didn’t have a father or any father figure to guide us while growing up but we were able to make very good decisions that shaped our lives by listening to the likes of Nana Ampadu, and George Darko, among others for wisdom,” he added.

He urged Ghanaians to embrace Highlife music, which he believes is integral to their unique identity and cultural heritage, rather than adopting foreign influences that do not resonate with their traditions and values.
