Ghanaian actress Beverly Afaglo has voiced her concerns about the increasing prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption among the youth in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on Accra FM on September 25, 2024, she noted the trend of young people, especially ladies engaging in regrettable activities.

“The smoking and the drinking are too much. You are too young to engage in such vices. This lifestyle of smoking and drinking excessive alcohol and renting Airbnbs for house parties and doing lots of this that you won't even be able to remember the next day is worrying,” she stated.

Afaglo also expressed her worries about the current state of HIV/AIDS awareness.

She recalled when HIV/AIDS campaigns in the media were more prominent and noted how the reduced campaigns have led to the youth no longer exercising caution in their behaviour.

“The awareness is no longer loud. When I was young the HIV/AIDs awareness campaigns were in our faces. We were told we would be sick all the time, we wouldn't be able to marry. All that kept us on our toes.

“But nowadays, the youth are told that if they get HIV, they can just take medicines and they would be fine. But is it easy to get such meds every day?

“Plus if you have AIDs and you approach someone who doesn't have it, he/she would not want to marry you. So why do you have to go through all that?” she quizzed.

Afaglo urged the youth to reconsider their lifestyle choices, warning that the consequences of their actions would only become visible when it's too late.

“What we are seeing with the young ones who are drinking and smoking and having rampant sex is bad.

“They should tone it down cause they would regret it. But by the time they realise their mistake and want to change, it's already too late,” she said.
