Akuffo Addo Free SHS Education Could Be Possible

It sounds incredible to many Ghanaians that Nana Akuffo Addo's free educational policy for secondary schools in the country would not materialize. Some people think it is just a campaign promise but it is not. It could be possible if the NPP flagbearer is willing to implement the policy effectively.

Although, we operate boarding and day schools in the country and to that effect some politicians think that it would be difficult for the government to bear the costs of boarding fees if all the students choose to be boarders. But we should also remember that choosing of schools and the computer selecting system is already at work so it may depend on the peformance of the pupil during the Junior High School final examination and also availability of beds and dormitaries in the schools.

1. Pupils have the choice to select three different secondary schools while the first choice will be his or he best school following by the second and the third respectively but when he or she peforms well he or she will get the first choice.

After the pupil has been picked up by his or her first choice school, the parents will decide either their ward would be a day student or a boarder. At this juncture there is a provision for beds for all newly selected students so there would be no beds problem at all.

Normally, pupils first and second choice schools are far away from where they live but it is believe that the third choice school has to be in the district where the pupil's parents or guardians are residing. The third choice school would pick the pupil after the first and second choice schools were unable to admit the pupil due to selecting process, so to be a boarder or not would depend on ones performance during JHS examination.

2.After that theGovernment can also allow the boarders to pay for their feeding costs only and (he) the governmnent would bear for the cost of tuition and other dormitary expenses so what the boarders would be paying would be very little and not to drain the coffers of their guardians. Day students would also pay for day fees only, tuition and other expenses would be beared by the government. For instance, if today boarding students are paying 380 Cedis including tuition, it could be reduced to 120 cedis after deducting tuition fees and other expenses. The same thing will also apply to day students.

The policy is not coming to ease financial burdens of poor parents who cannot afford to educate their wards in secondary schools only but it will also give the youth access to further and higher educational opportunities in the country and the world at large.

This is a tip of the iceberg but how the policy would be implemented will come out from the team of experts and it is believe that it has nothing to do with campaign promise so do not forget to vote for Nana Akuffo Addo coming 2012 election, Thank you.
