Columnist: Concern NDC Members in Diaspora

Bawumia and NAPO no match for John and Jane

It is now public knowledge that the New Patriotic Party's presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has officially announced his running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh. However their track record suggests that the NPP is not genuinely prepared to govern, but rather seeking to maintain power for selfish interests.

As the Vice President and a former Deputy Governor of the central bank (2006-2008), Dr. Bawumia was responsible for physical policy and financial stability, yet his tenure had little impact on the economy. During his time at the central bank, inflation rates ranged from 17.5% to 20%. Although the country faced challenges during that period, the current situation is exceedingly difficult and has pushed many into extreme hardship and poverty, which is happening under the leadership of Bawumia and his superior.

Today, Dr.Bawumia as the Vice President and head of the economic team, raises questions about the country's current state. As an economist, what intervention policies has the economic team implemented to alleviate the suffering of the masses? What relief measures have been put in place to address the pain of the extreme hardship Ghanaians face since this administration began in 2017? Instead, poverty continues to rise, business fold, unemployment soars, inflation increases, and bank interest discourages infant industries.

The high cost of goods and services has made it difficult for families to afford basic needs like cooking a pot of soup for a family of four. How can Ghanaians trust a leader who has failed to address these social atrocities and breached their social contract with the people?

As of August 2024, Ghana's external debt from January 7, 2017, has ballooned to over $200 billion, raising questions about the utilization of these funds. It’s challenging to account for how the money was spent, much like trying to pass a camel through a needle. Additionally, there are concerns about the country’s internal revenue generation, oil revenue allocation, and the lack of transparency in these matters. Furthermore, Ghanaians are seeking answers about the social interventions and policies implemented by this government, which have failed to cushion their suffering.

As a Muslim, the vice president's impact on the Zongo community is also under scrutiny, with many feeling down by his leadership. The running mate of the NPP's flag bearer, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempreh (NAPO), has also been criticized
for his handling of the education sector during his tenure as the Minister of Education.

The rushed implementation of the "FREE SHS" program without proper feasibility studies and stakeholder engagement has been a concern for many. It’s worth noting that former president John Dramani Mahama was the first to introduce the FREE SHS dubbed progressive Free SHS program which aimed to ensure a steady and progressive implementation, avoiding issues like overcrowding, infrastructure deficit, and funding constraints. However, the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government refused wider consultation and pushed ahead with implementation, seemingly for political gain. Today the SHS program is marred by challenges akin to the Dutch Disease.

While opinion may vary, it’s undeniable that the NDC government, from Jerry John Rawlings to Mahama has contributed significantly to Ghana's education system. In contrast, the NPP regime from Kufuor to Akufo-Addo has faced criticism for their handling of education. These facts are open to scrutiny and cross-examination.
It’s disappointing that the NPP has presented Ghanaians with a chronic liar and an arrogant running mate for the 2024 election.

The current energy minister, known for his arrogance, has failed to address
the power crisis despite sufficient funding, leaving a $2billion debt. This crisis affects not only residents but also businesses, causing infant industries to collapse. The NPP's choice of candidate is perplexing, considering their abysmal track record in public office. We urge Ghanaians to be discerning and not swayed by material gifts. This election is a crucial decision that will shape our nation's destiny, moving away from a democracy that prioritizes the interest of a few to one that benefits all.

We need a serious-minded leader with extensive experience in governing the nation.

Let rally behind John Dramani Mahama and Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to create a 24-hour economy that generates jobs and boosts productivity.

Ghana deserves better, and together we can make the Ghana we want happen.
