Fair and peaceful December 7, elections in Ghana

On December 7, 2024 Ghanaians went to the polls to elect a new President and a new Parliament for the 4th Republic of Ghana. This was the 9th successive election in the country since 1992 when Ghana under the then military regime headed by Flt Lt. John Jerry Rawlings returned the country to civilian rule. Since then the two largest political parties in the nation, namely the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the National Patriotic Party (NPP) have alternatively governed Ghana every 8 years.

The just ended 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections was a crucial one in the history of Ghana. The incumbent NPP government campaigned to ‘break the 8-year traditional rule’ which the 2 largest parties in the nation have alternatively been elected to power in the country.

The NPP under the presidential flagship of the current Vice President, Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia, campaigned on the party’s free Senior High School (SHS) programme since assuming power in 2017 and its successful digitalization programme for the nation among other policies to retain power after ruling Ghana for 8 consecutive years.

On the other hand, the biggest opposition party, the NDC under the presidential flagship of the former President of Ghana, His Excellency John Mahama who won an election in 2012 to rule Ghana for 4 years only (2012 to 2016) and was seeking to return to the Presidency for his second term of office, campaigned strongly on the economic mismanagement of the incumbent NPP government to regain power in the 2024 elections.

The political campaigns by these 2 leading parties in Ghana prior to the December 7 elections were very vigorous and at sometimes acrimonious across the length and breadth of the country. Political tension in the country was very high and frightening to the peace of the nation. However, the good and naturally peaceful people of Ghana came together to ‘preach and pray’ for peace in the nation before, during and after the 2024 elections.

Though a few cases of unwonted violence resulting in the deaths of 3 people in the country immediately after the elections, was reported, the elections have been fair and peaceful as described by international observers. I would like to use this opportunity to commend the good people of our motherland, Ghana for exhibiting such peaceful and political maturity during the December 7, 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections in the country. Bravo to ALL.

I also use this occasion to congratulate the President-elect, the former president, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and his NDC party for their historic big victory in the electoral history of Ghana winning over 56 percent of the presidential vote and sweeping about 180 seats in Parliament so far. Ayekoo to the NDC for such sweet victory. However, I want to remind them of the huge task ahead of incoming NDC government to reset Ghana and restore the country to healthy national economy for the ordinary Ghanaian.

Though, the voter turn-out during this peaceful 2024 elections is considered low (about 60.9%) I strongly urge ALL Ghanaians to put behind any apathy as well as political frustration and join hands with the incoming NDC government under the leadership of our former president, His Excellency John Mahama who is returning to the Presidency of Ghana for his second term to reset and rebuild Ghana as promised by the NDC We have to build a progressive and prosperous nation in the years ahead for all Ghanaians.

Finally, I must note here the graceful and humble attitude of our incumbent Vice President, Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia, the presidential flag bearer of the defeated NPP in the 2024 elections for conceding to defeat in a timely manner to ensure that the peace of the nation becomes paramount. Ghana has won in this 9th election of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

Ayeeko to ALL GHANAIANS wherever we are, and God richly bless our homeland, Ghana.
