I wrote my first play, This Family Is Not For Sale, in 2014 and put together a team in the same year to prepare to stage it. We started rehearsals during the latter part of that year and staged the play in 2015 at the ETS Drama Studio on the University of Ghana campus. This was during the Valentine’s Day period.
Many years have come and gone. I have run several shows in Accra, Kumasi, Tarkwa, and Takoradi. Day in and out, it feels refreshing to tell new stories that give hope to the hopeless.
2025 will be a decade of writing, producing, directing, and staging plays ─ ten years of putting together theatrical productions that impact society. Tell you what, it has not been a jolly journey. There have been times of regret… and times of celebration; times of tears and times of applause.
One life lesson that has come to me repeatedly during this decade is the lesson of self-belief. What makes me confident that people would buy tickets to watch my play, especially when they have not read the script? Self-belief! What on earth pushed me to invest in a production like Emergency Wedding that was postponed twice because of COVID-19? Self-belief!
People who have no belief in themselves cannot do much in this life. They always take the backseat. They only watch on as others slay the giants they were born to slay.
Money is not your first need to chase your dreams. What you need first is to believe in yourself. A wo/man with a lot of money but without self-belief would only waste that money. They would spend it on material things, forgetting that a person’s wealth has nothing to do with their worth.
who believe in themselves know their worth. Their worth is not in what they have. It is in who they are. They may lose all they ever had but will never lose their worth. After all, they believe that they can always buy back opportunities with what resides on their inside.
In life, the storms would hit everybody but those who believe in themselves would get up one more time to fight. Self-belief is not blinded by the raging storms. It has the power to surf above those storms.
A wo/man who believes in themselves will always find a way even in the desert. When people doubt their worth, they never discover the weight of the strength they carry. They live all their lives admiring what others have yet ignorant of the wealth of resources that sits inside them.
Have you noticed that for God to use anybody in the Bible, those people had to work on their self-worth first? It is a simple life principle. There is no space at the table of greatness for those who have no value for their value. Until people know that they can also be great, as human as they are, they would only remain servants at that table of greatness.
Imagine the young shepherd called David daring to take on Goliath who had been fighting since his youth; a man whose fighting experience was equal to (if not more than) the shepherd’s age. That was great courage. What could make a little shepherd boy think he could slay a giant? Self-belief!
The giants we would slay in this life hinges on our self-belief. Timidity would make our giants slay us before we even dare to attack them. If you think you can do great things in life, you are right. If you think you cannot, you are just as right. What you think of yourself is the only version of yourself you can gift this world.
Many have died in the hands of giants they were born to slay because of self-doubt and fear. Many great songs have not been written because the writers are still doubting if people would love them. Many dreams would never be a reality because the dreamers are still snoring out of their fear of failure.
One quality that is common to all great people is self-belief. You cannot climb the ladder of greatness if you doubt your capabilities. You will fall after just a step. If you doubt what is on your inside, there is no mountain you can move on the outside. The mountains will collapse on you before you even dare.
Self-belief is the seed of every fruit of greatness. The faith we have in ourselves is the same measure of faith we need to conquer the challenges around us. Some people may have been born with an added advantage of wealth and influence. To begin with, however, we all are born with the ability to believe in ourselves to create every other advantage we need.
In life, you do yourself a great disservice if you do not believe in yourself. Opportunities pass you by. Doors are slammed in your face. You let go of great ideas of wealth that keep coming to you. Self-doubt is like a self-inflicted curse. It keeps taming the giant that roars inside of you.
If you see anybody you admire, be certain that they believe in themselves enough to portray the qualities you admire. Self-doubt only makes us who and what we are not supposed to be. We die living a life that is not ours.
Everyone is destined for greatness. We are all born to leave a lasting impact on our society. However, it all begins with self-belief. A wo/man without it cannot help themselves let alone help others.
I believe in God as the source of every success of mine. However, He can do nothing with a wo/man who doubts what He has placed on their inside. We cannot give to the world what we do not have. Belief in Him begins with belief in ourselves.
Believe in what sits in you. Like a weapon, you need it to slay every giant in your life. You were born for this!
