The intransigent posture of Madam Jean Mensah with her team at the Electoral Commission (EC) since 2019 toward the victorious National Democratic Congress (NDC) and incoming President Mahama is no news to many Ghanaians.
Since the assumption into office as the EC Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensah and her team have been very hostile toward the NDC and one of the deputy Commissioners, Dr. Bossman Asare ever called the NDC ‘as a threat to democracy’.
I have expressed my concerns previously as to why the intransigence of this current EC’s team, which is not a direct beneficiary of electoral victories.
Despite the suspected opaqueness and avoidable errors of this current EC in relation to the electoral register and associated BVDs/BVRs, the Ghanaian Voters went out in their numbers to bring back former President Mahama and the NDC on December 7, 2024.
Astonishly, the victory for President John Dramani Mahama with a resounding victory of 58.17% as the 6th President of the 4th Republic is highly historic. Additionally, over 187 seats were won for the NDC gives it an absolute Majority in the coming 9th Parliament.
The equally split current 8th Parliament, leading to the recent ‘Parliamentary tsunami’, has now transformed into a convincing number of Members of Parliament (MPs) for President Mahama to roll out his transformative policies to reset and rebuild Ghana for a sustainable future and development for all in the country for the next 4 years.
The demeanor of the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensah coupled with her avoidable mistake in announcing figures for President Mahama during the declaration of the Presidential results a few days ago showed that she was unpleasantly surprised of the historic win for the latter.
Madam Jean Mensah had no choice but to carry out her unpleasant duty, as the Returning Officer for the Presidential elections, to declare former President John Dramani Mahama as the 6th President of the 4th Republic of Ghana.
Her electoral decisions prior to the December elections as well as last minute EC’s errors pointed to helping the now defeated New Patriotic Party (NPP) to either rig the elections or win with a slim margin despite poor performance in government for 8 years. However, that did not presumably work in line with the Jean Mensah-led EC’s liking.
Undoubtedly, this landslide victory for President Mahama and the NDC comes with a huge responsibility and expectation from Ghanaians. Therefore, the next Mahama/NDC regime has to put up an outstanding performance coupled with high sense of urgency, humility, accountability and prudence to implement its transformative ‘Resetting Ghana Agenda 2024 Manifesto’.
As the saying goes, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. That said, the Mahama/NDC-led regime will deliver according to its transformative policies captured in the 2024 Manifesto of the Party.
Kudos to the President-Elect and the NDC for a resounding victory in the 2024 general elections. Change has finally come!
