With a track record of transformative initiatives in environmental sustainability and climate action, his return to power represents a renewed opportunity to address the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.

A Legacy of Leadership in Climate Action

During his previous tenure as President (2012–2017), H.E. Mahama established himself as a champion for environmental sustainability and climate resilience. His administration prioritized the integration of climate change into Ghana’s national development agenda, ensuring that the country was well-positioned to address the growing threat of climate change.

Key achievements from his presidency include:

1. Adoption of the National Climate Change Policy (NCCP) in 2013: Under his leadership, Ghana developed and adopted the NCCP, a comprehensive framework to build a climate-resilient and climate-compatible economy. The policy focused on adaptation, mitigation, and social development, setting the foundation for sustainable growth.

2. Mainstreaming Climate Action into National Planning: H.E. Mahama spearheaded efforts to integrate climate considerations into Ghana’s Medium-Term Development Plans, ensuring that ministries, departments, and agencies aligned their objectives with climate resilience.

Global Roles in Climate Advocacy

H.E. Mahama’s commitment to climate action extended beyond Ghana’s borders. He has held significant positions that highlight his dedication to the global climate agenda, including:

• African Union Climate Change Ambassador: In this role, he advocated for Africa’s unique climate challenges to be addressed on the global stage, emphasizing the need for climate justice and equitable financing.

• Global Champion for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Appointed by the United Nations, H.E. Mahama has worked tirelessly to advance SDG 13 (Climate Action) and promote sustainable development globally.
