Judas NPP injuring Ghana's democracy by forcefully declaring the Vice President's office useless

The NPP's record in the their nearly 8 years of governance have been describe by many as the worse Ghana ever got. Their performance in,infrastructure, social welfare, corruption, macro-economic management and many more prove many right that the current NPP administration led by Nana and Bawumia is the worse Ghanaians have ever witnessed.

It is not surprising therefore that many of the key actors in this administration keep denying one another with some appropriating the supposed good initiatives to themselves.

After the election of Dr. Bawumia as NPP's flagbearer, he has always sought to dissociate himself from the maladministration of this government declaring himself as an angel. In one of his lectures to present his vision to Ghanaians, he said; "as Vice-President, I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driver's seat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities.”

He proceeded to add; “Clearly, the initial conditions that we inherited in 2017 are not the same as they will be in 2025. Therefore, my priorities will be different."

This is a betrayal of President Nana Addo because he painted a picture to Ghanaians that the demon in this administration is the President. He wanted us to understand that his fantastic ideas are not given attention and so the ills of this government must be given to only Nana Addo to carry. But the question he must answer is why he described the Economic Management Team (EMT) which he led as 'fantastic' when he knew so well that President Nana addo was not giving them ears.

Aside Bawumia denying the ills in this administration, he proceeded to tell us that he successfully implemented 33 different policies. "If you look at the work I have done as Vice President, which is the basis for which I want you to vote for me as President, I can count about 33 policy initiatives." The initiatives he mentioned include the failed fSHS policy, digitalization, One constituency - One Ambulance, Agenda 111, One District -One Factory, and so on and so forth.

The One constituency - One Ambulance is marred with grand corruption and conflict of interest as the president's family is deeply involved in the procurement. Again, not a single agenda 111 project is completed and operational and no concrete figures are mentioned regarding the One District - One Factory in terms of the number currently operational and how much foreign exchange saved.

The Vice President also failed to add to his 33 policy initiatives, the PDS scandal, road contracts awarded to his family members, stolen rice at the Tema Port traced to his office and the distribution of expired food at Sissala East District of which he is a leading actor.

Bawumia is not the only one misleading Ghanaians into thinking that the failures of this administration are the making of Nana Addo. Former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonus is reported to have clarified that; “the Vice President is an adviser to the president, he’s the prime adviser.

It doesn’t mean that whatever is proposed by the Vice President should be taken by the president because as I said, the executive authority is in one person.” Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu further claimed that the Cabinet Economic Subcommittee, chaired by Alan Kyerematen, had more influence than the Economic Management Team, chaired by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Alan Kyerematen who was also a Trade Minister under this administration was not happy with this accusation and rightly responded. He dismissed the claim as a desperate attempt to absolve Dr. Bawumia of the government’s economic misfortunes.

He said the cabinet subcommittees, which included the economic committee, did not wield any power over decision-making explaining that his committee prepared proposals for the cabinet, where decisions were collectively made. Therefore, holding him responsible for the economic misfortunes was blame-shifting, as such an accusation should have been placed at the doorstep of the Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and Dr Bawumia’s Economic Management Team.

I side with Alan Kyerematen for declaring that decisions were collectively made. He seems to better understand a nation's governance better than Dr. Bawumia because he is not running away for the worse economic record he was part of. Though accepting blame, Alan proceeded to appropriate to himself some of the 33 policy initiatives Dr. Bawumia is claiming to have successfully executed. The question is, who is surely responsible for what?

Article 60(1) of the 1992 Constitution created the Office of the Vice President as follows; "There shall be a Vice-President of Ghana who shall perform such functions as may be assigned to him by this Constitution or by the President." the functions assigned to the Vice President under this article is first by the Constitution and second by the president.

Article 60(1) further puts an important burden on the Vice President. It says; "whenever the President dies, resigns or is removed from office, the Vice-President shall assume office as President for the unexpired term of office of the President with effect from the date of the death, resignation or removal of the President."

If not for partisan parochial gains, the above do not show that the Vice President's office is useless. The office created by the Constitution to perform functions assigned to it and succeed the President under certain conditions must not be declared useless by anybody.

The NPP must be let known that while they work hard to exonerate Dr. Bawumia of incompetence by distancing him from this government, they must also know that they are severely injuring and denting the exemplary democracy John Mahama and others left for us.

If the NPP and Dr. Bawumia think the Office of the Vice President is so useless, why appoint Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh popularly known as Napo to the position? Napo's appointment was met with heavy rejection by the NPP caucus in Parliament led by rebel leader Hon. Appiah Kubi. Prior to Napo's appointment, many other NPP big wiggs were lobbying and fighting for the position.

Some notable names were Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare; Former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu among others. The late John Kumah was also reported to be in the race for this position. This tells how important the NPP see this position but only chose to dirty it to comfort Dr. Bawumia and also deceive Ghanaians for votes.

But why must the NPP and Dr. Bawumia think Ghanaians are so irrational to give ears to these desperate acts of appropriation and misappropriation? Why must he think that the Former Vice President, Amissah Arthur is required to answer his 170 economic questions but he must not be questioned on the failures of a government he is the second most powerful?

Dr. Bawumia went to Amissah Arthur's hometown, Moree in the Central Region in 2016 and strongly commanded that his 170 questions be answered. “I hear this is the Vice President Amissah Arthur’s hometown is that the case? I have been looking for him.

He has 170 questions to answer and he has been running away so tell him I came to his hometown and he should answer the 170 questions. There is nowhere to hide again.” The strong shift of stance indicates that Dr. Bawumia represents the worst form of Judas Iscariot and must not be entertained anywhere giving excuses.

Governance is a collective effort and not a one man show. Ghanaians will not accept the NPP's presentation of Dr. Bawumia as an angel. In fact, Dr. Bawumia can better be presented as the Judas of our time. Ghanaians must not listen to any key participant of the maladministration visited upon us in the last 7 years.

President Mahama is the kind of leader we need to solve the many challenges we face. He has done it before and we need to vote and encourage him to do more and reset Ghana for us all to enjoy.
