Ever since declaring his intention to contest the General Secretaryship position of the NPP last year, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, together with Mr. Paul Afoko has not seen peace. The circumstance leading to his motor accident is still a mystery to be unravelled. The refusal of the previous NPP National Leadership to postpone the Delegates Conference in Tamale on the basis of Kwabena's fatal accident confirmed that, the man was in for a battle.
Like Afoko, Kwabena was tagged to one of the perceived factions in the NPP, and was subjected to all forms of verbal and physical abuses. In a visit to Nana Addo's residence prior to the NPP Delegates' Conference, one Charles Nii Tagoe Jnr., who claims to be Nana Addo's henchman, described Kwabena in unprintable words just because Kwabena refused to greet him. Thankfully, none of Kwabena's saboteurs leveled any corruption charges on him or doubted his sense of wisdom and capability. Neither was his loyalty to the party, experience, nor competence questioned. As ordained by God, Kwabena came out victorious after the Tamale Congress beating the incumbent by over 500 votes.
After his inauguration as the Chief Scribe of the NPP, Kwabena focused on making reforms geared towards winning Election 2016. He refurbished the NPP National Headquarters single-handed, and together with the National Leadership, revamped the NPP's Communications structure. He personally donated two offices to Dr. Bawumia and AFAG for their operations.
Regrettably, the General Secretary's authority has been greatly undermined since Nana Addo assumed the flag-bearship position of the NPP. Not only have meetings held by the National Leadership found their way into the media, especially Freddy Blay's Daily Guide, but also, there have been occasions NPP supporters have used machetes, sticks, stones etc to chase Kwabena Agyepong out of his office. In an instance, one Hajia Fati, another Akufo-Addo fanatic, reminded Kwabena of how his late father, Justice Agyepong died, and threatened to visit a similar one on him.
More seriously, these surrogates continue to claim that ex-President Kufour, Alan Kyerematen, Afoko etc have an 'Agenda 2020' to ensure that Nana Akufo-Addo loses Election 2016, a concocted allegation calculated to depict a fractured relationship between Nana and Kwabena. No wonder, Freddy Blay, the man who disintegrated the CPP, organised an emergency Steering Committee meeting without the knowledge of the General Secretary. Why an emergency meeting at the 11th hour, when all the guidelines pertaining to the parliamentary primaries were in the public domain more than 3 weeks ago?
For the records, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong worked for Nana Akufo-Addo as his Communication Director when the latter contested against Kufuor in 1998 NPP Presidential Primary. Kwabena again worked for President Kufuor as his Press Secretary between 2001 and 2006. In 2010, Kwabena worked for Alan Kyerematen as his Campaign Manager during the NPP flagbearership race in 2010. Thus, it was not by accident that such three (3) eminent personalities of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo Tradition tapped the rich experience of Kwabena. Therefore, it would be naive on the part of any party member to suspect Kwabena of any foul play.
As former president Kufuor once said; "It is better to be a messenger in a party in government than being a General Secretary of an opposition party", and I'm sure Kwabena is aware of this. Let's allow Kwabena Agyepong and Afoko to do their work as the Secretary and Chairman of the NPP respectively. It is only when we do this that we would have the guts to criticize or blame them in the eventuality of power failure in 2016. We cannot expend money and other resources on campaigns to win the hearts of non-NPP members whilst making others uncomfortable in the party. It would amount to taking baskets to fetch water.
God bless Ghana! God bless the NPP!! God bless Kufuor!!!
