Re: We won’t respond to corruption claims by Martin Amidu – Office of the Speaker

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin

Joy News, in a publication dated 11 June 2024 and sourced from Prince Adu-Owusu, reported under the headline above that the Speaker "gave Mr. Amidu seven days to retract and apologize, but Mr. Amidu disregarded the Speaker's request."

The Joy News report further added that "speaking to JoyNews, the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Speaker, Kofi Attor, clarified that there is no truth to the allegations made by the former Special Prosecutor. He also insisted that Speaker Alban Bagbin has never 'confessed' to be corrupt."

Joy News effectively provided Kofi Attor with a platform to accuse me of lying when I was writing based on verifiable facts and evidence regarding the alleged "self-confession."

Contrary to the headline given to the Joy News report, any rational person would have realized that it provided its platform to the Office of the Speaker to respond to my claims. Therefore, I am now exercising my constitutional right to issue a rejoinder to refute Mr. Kofi Attor's accusations against me on Joy News of lying. I expect Joy News to publish my rejoinder as mandated under clause 6 of Article 162 of the 1992 Constitution.

On 10 June 2024, which marked the 32nd Anniversary of the formation of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 1992, Joy FM provided a platform for Mr. Kofi Attor, Chairman of the planning committee for the occasion, to launch another attack against me by calling me a liar.

I first met and knew Mr. Kofi Attor, reportedly an employee of Parliament serving as the Chief of Staff to the Speaker of Parliament, during my assignment relieving the late Dr. Kwabena Adjei in the Volta Regional Administration as PNDC Deputy Secretary in March 1988.

He knows me well enough to understand that I am not a liar, except when he speaks on behalf of his employer and the side that benefits him. As a preemptive strike, Joy FM and he might wish to review the tip of the iceberg reported on:

"Alban Bagbin admits he is corrupt (audio) - Graphic Online." My article published on 27 May 2024, titled "The NDC needs to think long...," did not use the word "admits." Hence, the host and he on the Joy FM program on 10 June 2024 must have referred to the link above, inserting the word "admits" into my mouth during their TV interview while feigning that I presented no evidence to support the words I actually wrote - "the self-confessed corrupt Speaker.....".

The evidence has always been readily available all over the internet; one simply needed to search for it for the evidence to emerge in multiple streams.

The media cannot claim exceptionalism when it comes to upholding and defending the fundamental rights and freedoms of free speech, as guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution. Responsible and unbiased journalism would have unearthed what I referred to as the tip of the iceberg disclosed in the Graphic Online (audio) link publication in the preceding paragraph of this rejoinder.

The media should rise above petty politics if the 1992 Constitution is to withstand the political parties' desperation for power through deceiving the electorate. Ghana must always come first.
