As the year 2016 comÂes to a successful enÂd in some few days ahÂead, *The
Impact Crew* makes a retrospect of the happenings thÂat embraced the
GhanaÂian showbiz industry Âthroughout the year. ÂThis year can be
clasÂsified as a ‘black yeÂar’ for many GhanaianÂs since it has witnesÂsed
the deaths of manÂy young promising talÂents and veterans in the showbiz
industry. The tyranny of death did not only lay it Âcold hands on only
showbiz personalities bÂut prominent people iÂn the country as wellÂ. *Dickson
Kwaku Amponsah*, a free-lance wriÂter on his Facebook timeline on the 20th
NÂovember 2016 took the pain to compile a liÂst of celebrity deathÂs that
has been regisÂtered in the country Âas at the aforementioÂned date. The
web of death had in its custÂody a number of celebrities whose tremendoÂus
contribution can never be underestimated. Basically, this article will seek
to examine the showbiz Âcircle in Ghana, blenÂding both the ugly anÂd the
good side of it in the year 2016 undÂer review.
Forgive me to remind Âyou of the demise of Âthese showbÂiz personalities
whose contribution to the growth of our motherland was enormous. Namely;
Nkomode (Actor), ConfidencÂe Kwadwo Baah (JournaÂlist), George Forest
Â(Music Producer), VibÂrant Fya (Musician), ÂUriah Asante (FooÂtballer),
Daasebre GyÂamenah (Musician), J. B. DanÂquah (Politician), MiÂnister Danny
Nartey (Musician), Emmanuel Kwesi Afranie (FootbalÂl Coach), Ebenezer
Donkor aka Katawere (AcÂtor), Gifty Temeng (Actress) and many others. It’s
so sorrowfÂul but such is life. Until we meet again on the judgment day,
may their souls rests in perfect peace.
Also, the year under review witnessed one of the hottest lyrical war
between the 'self-acÂclaimed African Rap gÂod' (Sarkodie) and thÂe
self-acclaimed god Âmc (M.anifest). The controversies among these Âgreat
artiste attracted the attention of mÂusic pundits, musicians and music
lovers iÂn the country. This lyrical war all started wÂhen Sarkodie
released a track titled ‘BossÂy’ which featured musÂic producer Jay So.
TÂhe track ended by SarÂkodie making referencÂe to M.anifest’s rap
signÂature.
M.anifest understood Sarkodie’s line in hiÂs song as disrespect, as he
ended the tracÂk with a line attribuÂted to him. ThereforeÂ, M.anifest
replied Sarkodie with a diss tÂrack titled, ‘god mc’Â. Immediately after
tÂhe release of ‘god mc’, SarkodiÂe also did a counter Âtrack titled
‘kanta’ as a direct response Âto M.anifest. Right aÂway, the entertainmenÂt
industry was set abÂlaze as virtually all the music pundits anÂd lovers
reacted to tÂhe lyrical war betweeÂn these artistes and Âeven some started
takÂing sides of their favourite among the twoÂ. The ‘kanta’ track bÂy
Sarkodie generated Âso much controversy tÂhat, it nearly attracÂted a court
case. SimÂply, Sarkodie’s attempt to reply with a heÂavy punch line
againsÂt M.anifest mistakenlÂy demeaned the brand Âof Ghana Textiles
PriÂnting (GTP). Series Âof cease fire tracks Ârecorded from the camÂp of
Jay So, Gemini, Âand E.L later came in to calm down the nerÂves of the
artistes wÂho were on fire by thÂen.
Fast forward, GhanaiaÂns thought the year wÂill end without any lÂyrical
war between arÂtistes after the ‘kanÂta versus godmc’ untiÂl MTV Base
Africa relÂeased a list of ten (10) hottest emcees in Ghana. The list
inclÂuded the name of Desmond Blackmore known iÂn showbiz as D Black Âover
the expense of WÂanlov Da Kubolor. Off late, there has been an argument
about D ÂBlack being a ‘wack’ Ârapper. Therefore, WaÂnlov expressed his
diÂssatisfaction about D Black’s inclusion anÂd even continued to rÂelease
two diss trackÂs titled ‘malafaka’ aÂnd ‘Ah Well' against ÂMTV Africa and D
BlacÂk. The later also resÂponded with a freestyÂle diss titled ‘The LÂist’
which set social media ablaze after fÂew minutes of its release.
More importantly, songs from the camp of some artiste got trending
throughout the country and even in the various ghettos. Choices remix by
Sarkodie, Mahama Paper by Shatta Wale, Yɛwɔ Krom by Atom, Ekikimi by Wisa
Gried and many others were all over the place and in the various media.
It's worthy to talk about Wisa Greid's manhood explosion at the
Decemba2Rememba concert.
Likewise, because 2016 marked the general elections year, therefore,
several showbiz personalities and some pastors endorsed the two party
giants in the country for their personal reasons and gains. Notable among
them are John Dumelo, Mzbel, Bull Dog, and many others endorsed NDC. Again,
the likes of Daddy Lumba, Agya Koo, A-plus, Lucky Mensah, Pastor Owusu
Bempah and several others also backed the victorious party called NPP for
the December 7 polls in the country.
The year 2016 showbiz in retrospect cannot be left the achievements of
soÂme hardworking artistÂes. A lot of award evÂents were organized tÂo
applaud the works oÂf some artiste in the country on merit. The most
prestigiÂous awards show in Ghana in the year under review gave artiste
Âof the year to Elom AÂdablah, better known Âby his stage name EL Âby
Vodafone Ghana MusÂic Awards 2016. This Âraised eyebrows, becaÂuse some
entertainmenÂt pundits and music lÂovers thought EL doesÂn’t deserve the
artisÂte of the year award Âbut rather Bisa Kdei Âdeserved it due to hiÂs
revival of the highÂlife music in the couÂntry. Nonetheless, thÂe likes of
Sarkodie, ÂShatta Wale, StonebwoÂy, Bisa Kdei, Kofi KiÂnaata and mÂany
others have been Âable to badge some plÂagues to their creditÂ.
MÂzvee was nominated to represent Ghana at 2016 Black EntertainmeÂnt (BET)
Awards, although she couldn’t winÂ. However, her stunniÂng outfit to the
awarÂd show became the talk of town as it won the mosÂt best dressed act
on the day of the occasÂion. Truly, Mzvee’s nomination to BET AwarÂds 2016
came as a shock to EL who thought Âhe should have been nominated instead.
DesÂpite, this clearly shows that our entertainment industry is movÂing
forward graduallyÂ.
Now, as we're about the close the showbiz chapter in the year 2016, a lot
of musical shows are being organized by our artiste purposely to entertain
their fans and also pocket some money. The annual Rapperholic concert by
Sarkodie, Bar concert by EL, The Bhim concert by StoneBwoy, The Experience
of Kojo Antwi Reloaded by Kojo Antwi and many other musical concerts will
be headlined by the peoples' favourite artistes to spice up the Christmas
festivities.
Therefore, as we joÂurney into the year 2Â017, we hope that morÂe glories
will be achÂieved by our artistes Âin and outside the coÂuntry. As people,
our failure to recognize the impressive works of these celebrities is
the main reason wÂhy the illuminati hit singer, Sarkodie released the
trending trÂack ‘Trumpet’. This pÂiece again seeks to cÂongratulate all the
hÂearts and minds that Âmade the showbiz induÂstry wow in the year Â2016
under review. We hope that the trumpeÂt of success will be Âblown on a
high pitch in the year 2017 and beyond.
