When the spectators became citizens

They promised us that they would resolve the galamsey menace. We believed them. With bold assertions, they claimed they would put their jobs on the line to curb this rampant illegal mining. We placed our trust in their words.

But the reality has been far from the promises made. As the sun rises on our land, we wake up to a harsh truth—not only have they deceived us, but their actions have also led to the destruction of our precious forest reserves and water bodies. Rivers that once ran clear and pure are now tainted, their waters colored and tasting bitter, poisoned with mercury and cyanide. The ecological balance that sustains our livelihoods is now in peril.

In our desperation and frustration, we stood up to speak out. We raised our voices to tell them about the catastrophic effects of their deceit. But instead of listening, they beat us down, handcuffed us, and put us in jail. Our crime? Daring to speak truth to power.

It’s a cruel irony—these are the same leaders who once asked us to be citizens, not spectators. We believed them. But no more. The deceit and destruction they have wrought upon our land cannot be overlooked. Their time must come to an end. They and their cabal must not see power again.

The time has come for accountability. The future of our environment, our livelihoods, and our children’s health depends on it. We must rise, not as spectators but as active participants in the fight for our land and our future. The promise of a better tomorrow lies not in the hands of deceitful leaders, but in the collective action of a united citizenry, standing against the forces that threaten to destroy our collective future. This isn’t just a party issue; it’s a collective concern that threatens the very fabric of our country.

We honour the brave citizens leading the charge. Your courage and dedication are truly commendable. Hats off to each and every one of you!
