The outcome of the 2020 general elections was partially in favor of the NPP. We won the Presidential election with 51.30%, while JM scored 47.36%. However, in the Parliamentary elections, we suffered a significant loss. Our seats dropped from 169 in 2016 to 137 in 2020.
Following this distressing defeat in the parliamentary elections and a reduction of nearly 3 percentage points in the presidential results from 2016, an Election Review Committee was inaugurated in December 2020 to investigate, particularly, why our parliamentary seats fell so drastically.
The committee was chaired by former Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Marfo. Other members included Mrs. Ama Frimpomaa Dwomoh, H.E. Papa Owusu Ankomah, Madam Elizabeth Ohene, Mr. Fred Oware, Hon. Awal Mohammed, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Mrs. Salamatu Forgor, and Hon. Kwame Osei Prempeh.
Between December 2020 and May 2021, the committee worked tirelessly and submitted its report to the party leadership in May 2021.
The committee was tasked with honestly and impartially reviewing the party's performance in the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. They were to produce a thorough report with comprehensive recommendations to improve the party's electoral fortunes in future elections.
Four years down the line, we have suffered the worst defeat in the NPP's history since 1996 in the just-ended general elections. Yet, another committee has been announced to investigate the 2024 defeat. This does not seem rational to me.
The questions lingering in the minds of party members across the country are:
1. Did the Osafo Marfo-led committee do a good job?
2. What were the findings of the committee?
3. What were the recommendations of the committee?
4. Were the recommendations implemented by the party leadership to address the challenges?
5. Should we continue down this path? Is this the way forward?
6. Do we really need a committee to investigate why we lost?
7. Would it not serve the party better for the national leadership to step aside and make way for an interim leadership to oversee our regrouping, rebuilding, and restrategizing?
