We have seen many congratulatory messages pour in from various leaders across the continent and the world after the E.C declared John Mahama and the NDC winners of the just ended general elections. Surprisingly, we are yet to see a congratulatory message from the president of Equatorial Guinea, Obiang Mbasogo Nguema. I know you would be asking , ‘what the fuss about a congratulatory message from Equatorial –Guinea’? but pause, do you remember Alhaji Bature publishing a story in his Al-hajj newspaper on the 19 th of July 2012, with the title ‘JJ, NDC part ways at last’? (http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=245162). In this story, Alhaji Bature revealed how ex-president Rawlings went to faraway Equatorial Guinea in July this year to disclose how NDC was planning to rig the 2012 general elections. The ex-president according to the paper made the startling revelation when he was hosted by the Equatorial Guinean leader Obiang Mbasogo Nguema, alongside the President of Surinam. The conduct of Jerry Rawlings was said to have evoked the irk of the NDC leadership at the time and were going table the ‘supposed misconduct of the ex-president at the party’s next NEC meeting.
The apparent silence of the Equatorial Guinean leader who is a good friend of the late Former President Mills at a time when most African leaders are congratulating John Mahama who has been declared winner of the Just ended general election is worrisome. Would it be that, the leader saw some credence in the allegations made by ex-president Rawlings against his own party?
The aftermath of the 2012 general election has seen most of the opposition parties crying foul over the results declared. The major opposition NPP is bracing up for a legal battle against the E.C over what it claims to be fraud in the result declared. The days ahead are pregnant with so much and we can only watch as the events unfold.
