Catto wins May Day golf

Accra, May 2, GNA - "Wonder kid" Niccolo Catto, a 14-year-old Italian and a pupil of Ghana International School, scored a total of 42 points to win the "Achimota Golf Club May Day Price Championship" played at Achimota in Accra on Sunday.

Catto who scored 22 and 20 points in the first and second rounds respectively with handicap of 18 will now be playing to a new handicap of 16.

Dr Machi Mapuranga, Zimbabwean High Commissioner to Ghana who paired with his wife Shuppi to win last Saturday's South African golf open took the second position with 39 points, Yaw Assa-Sam came third with 38 points while Albert Brock placed 4th with 37 points beating Charles Tabi on count back.

Florence Etwi-Barimah, won the ladies event with 40 points, while Elizabeth Essel Koomson was second with 37 points beating Shuppi Mapuranga on count back.

The one-day 18-hold stableford competition also marked the Remembrance Day for the late Mr. Mark Price, a member of the Club who died a few years ago.

Mr. Kwame Saara-Mensah, former Secretary of Youth and Sports during the PNDC era and captain of the Achimota Club, praised members for their massive turn out.

He described the late Mr. Price as a man whose contribution was immeasurable.

Mr. Saara-Mensah assigning no reasons announced that the competition would no longer be played.
