E.K. Owusu wins Tigo Tema Open at last

Enock K. Owusu kept on reminding anyone who could care to listen that this year's Tigo Tema Open title was his for the taking and in the cool ambience of the Country Golf Club in the harbour city on Sunday night was he crowned champion.

Owusu has won several monthly medals but never a major despite coming close many times. But the man who is keen to join the professional ranks soon finally delivered on the big stage playing very good golf to beat the field by 4 clear shots after grossing 146 over two days.

Runner-up was R.K. Mensah who returned 150 gross over two days with Peter K. Amenyo carrying home the 3rd prize off 151 gross. Winner E.K. Owusu, 2nd Mensah as well as Amenyo each received a Tigo Tablet and a trophy of various ranges as their respective prizes from the sponsors Tigo.

"I don't even need to talk again because I told you already that I will win Tema Open, Accra Open and Ghana Open. I have done it but it's just the beginning, my next target is the Ghana Open at Celebrity (Golf Club, Sakumono on September 22) so watch out for me," Owusu told www.sports.com.gh [1] with his prize firmly clutched under his arm.

Meanwhile, the Captain of the Tema Country Golf Club, Dr. Paul Owusu-Baah, has heaped praises on mobile telecommunication giants Tigo for their commitment and financial support of the club's flagship tournament spanning over a decades.

"To me, this is the biggest and most successful tournament we have ever organized, we had over 200 players, 35 professionals, 13 junior golfers, we had players from Togo, Ivory Coast, Nigeria. In terms of the numbers, organization, trophies and participation, everything was very good in addition to a perfect sponsor in Tigo. They gave us over 31 trophies which is unprecedented in the history of the club," Dr. Owusu-Baah said.

Such was the huge number of trophies at stake but the sponsors gave out a total of 8 Tigo Tablets, 7 pieces of Blackberry Bold, 4 pieces of Blackberry curve and many Tigo souvenirs in addition to the various winners. Add it the professionals' event which's winner Emos Korblah AKA Landlord took home GH¢1,800, runner up Vincent Torgah got GH¢1,200 and third placed E.K. Osei received GH¢800.
