Accra, March 5, GNA - Achimota Golf Club of Ghana defeated their Nigerian counterparts, IBB International Golf and Country Club of Abuja 32 and a half points to 18 and a half points to win the Bi-annual Independence Day Match Play Golf Championship which ended at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Sunday.
The Ghanaians, led by Kwame Saarah-Mensah took control of the game and deservedly won the first day by scoring 12 points as against six by the visitors.
Achimota Club continued their dominance over their opponents and went ahead to win the second day event by scoring 20 and-a-half points as against the Nigerians 12 and-a-half points. The championship was jointly sponsored by Zenith Bank, Unique Trust Financial Services, Coca Cola Bottling Company of Ghana Limited, Ecobank Ghana Limited and Auto Parts Limited.
Dr Tunji Kolapo, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana expressed the hope that the game, aimed at strengthening the already existing cordial relationship between the two countries would be sustained. He was joined by Mr Andy Ojei, Managing Director of Zenith Bank to present the over-all trophy to Kwame Saarah-Mensah, Captain of the Achimota Golf Club.
In a related development, Lucky Kwame became the proud winner of the Achimota Independence Golf competition when he returned a net score of 65.
He was followed by Norman Ashker at the second position with 66 net beating Eddy Addo on count-back while Robert Aziamakpor placed fourth with 67 net. Nana Bema Tackie won the Ladies event with 64 net with Rita Dzubey following at the second position with 66 net while Grace Afriyie took the third position with 70 net.
