Accra, Feb. 21, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor will take the ceremonial tee-off when the first Ghana Independence Open Golf Championship begins at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Saturday, March 3.
Mr Mike Ezan, President of the Achimota Golf Club, who announced this in Accra on Wednesday, said the two-day 36-Hole Scratch Championship which is open to amateur and professional golfers from Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Sierra Leone and Cote d'Ivoire, is expected to attract over 140 participants.
He said the event dubbed 'The President's Cup' which would be played under the rules of the World's Golf governing body, the Royal Ancient Golf Club of Scotland, is to be organized by the Achimota Golf Club in collaboration with the Ghana Golf Association (GGA).
Mr Ezan who is also the former President of the GGA said the Association is negotiating with some corporate bodies and institutions to sponsor the event which has some attractive prizes at stake. The President said the Club intends to make the event an annual affair when this year's event proves successful.
He said the competition would be climaxed with a dinner and presentation of prizes at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra on Sunday, March 4.
President Kufuor, who will be the Special Guest of Honour will present the ultimate trophy to the winner.
